For many of us growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, the Sunday chart countdown was essential listening.
Long before smartphones, streaming services and social media, millions of people tuned in to discover which songs were climbing the charts and who had reached Number One.
Between 4pm and 7pm every Sunday, the countdown brought music fans together. Whether listening at home, in the car or with friends, it was a shared musical experience.
Today, Woolfy’s Retro Charts recreates that sense of anticipation by revisiting the British charts from years gone by.
Two Classic Chart Years Every Week
Launched in 2020, Woolfy’s Retro Charts celebrates the music and memories of the British singles charts.
Each weekly programme explores the charts from the same week in two different classic years, offering a snapshot of the music that people were listening to at the time.
Along the way, listeners can rediscover forgotten favourites, revisit memorable hits and enjoy the songs that provided the soundtrack to different generations.
Rather than concentrating on a single decade, the programme draws on chart history spanning several decades.
No Gimmicks, Just Great Chart Music
Woolfy’s Retro Charts takes a straightforward approach to music radio.
As the show’s original description puts it:
“No gimmicks, no pointless waffle, no reading out chunks of text from Wikipedia verbatim.”
Instead, the focus is on the music, the charts and the memories associated with them.
And, in the words of the show itself, “That’s why it’s the only chart that counts!”
The programme is presented by experienced Scottish broadcaster Brian ‘Woolfy’ Woolfson, who has been working in radio since 2000.
His broadcasting career includes Real Radio, Clyde 1, Nation Radio and Central FM.
A self-confessed “chartographer”, Woolfy has spent years developing his knowledge of music charts, particularly the UK Top 40.
Broadcasting from studios in Glasgow, he now shares that knowledge with listeners on Rocking Fox Radio.
